Romantic White Nights are nothing more than the absence of a visible sunset. While they last, the day transitions into twilight, which is then replaced by a new day. This magical period is the most beloved time for traveling to Saint Petersburg.
White Nights in Saint Petersburg officially occur from June 11 to July 2. However, in reality, this unique natural phenomenon delights residents and visitors of the Northern Capital for nearly two months – from May 26 to July 16.
The length of daylight rapidly increases from late May until June 22, the summer solstice, which marks the shortest night of the year. After June 22, the days gradually begin to shorten, and the nights grow darker.
White Nights can be observed at latitudes above 60°, and Saint Petersburg is located at a latitude of 59°56ˈ.
The nights become brighter because the sun dips below the horizon at an angle of only 7°. The sun does not descend deeply, and the night turns into continuous twilight from sunset to sunrise.
The earliest White Nights in May are only slightly brighter than usual. However, from June 11 to July 2, during the peak of the White Nights, the streets of Saint Petersburg are truly bright, to the extent that artificial lighting becomes unnecessary.
During the White Nights period, Saint Petersburg hosts numerous events and themed excursions like Private Boat Tour.
